Decorating Shared Bedroom

To your kids, sharing a bedroom can seem like the end of the world. As a parent, it’s your goal to show your kids that sharing a room is an opportunity for late night chit chats, fort building and bonding experiences. When decorating a shared bedroom for your kids, you want to keep in mind that they each have their own individual personalities. Both children should be able to express themselves freely in their bedroom without one style dominating the other. Discover the best tips for creating a shared space your kids will love!

  • Maximize space. Depending on how much space there is, bunk beds are a no-brainer. Many children dream of having bunk beds in their bedroom and when they have to share a room with a sibling, there is a larger chance this dream can become a reality. Some bunk beds even come with added storage and/or desk space, allowing you to make the most of a bedroom.
  • Create a symmetrical look. Symmetry works well in a shared bedroom. Place two twin beds side-by-side with a dresser or nightstand in between to separate the beds. Install individual shelving over each bed to give each child a space to put their belongings.
  • Use neutral colors on the wall. A neutral color palette is recommended in a shared bedroom. This leaves more room for your children to use colorful accents that show off their personalities while avoiding the problem of clashing colors.
  • Add fun, colorful bedding. Though the bedding doesn’t have to be exactly the same, the comforters should complement each other. You can do this with colors in similar families or fabrics and textures that go well together. If you’re taking this route, use a neutral shade on the walls. This leaves more room for brightly colored or heavily patterned accessories!
  • Construct privacy zones. Curtains, bookshelves or dressers can act as room dividers and make each child feel like they are in their own space. Similarly, a room divider will give your kids more liberties to take with the decorating of their room. This gives them more freedom to decorate with the colors of their choosing. Depending on what type of room divider you choose, you can also gain more storage space, which is essential for a shared bedroom.
  • Designate closet space. One child may have more clothes than the other, but that shouldn’t mean they get to take over all of the storage space! There are a number of great closet dividers out there that will not only split the space in half, but offer different options for organizing the closet, including drawers, racks at different heights and shelves. Installing a closet organizer will help designate each child’s space and inspire them to stay organized.

Decorating a shared bedroom for your kids is not as difficult as it seems. Involve your kids in the planning so that they can express their thoughts and opinions.  Your children may even have a lot of the same thoughts and feelings towards how they would like to decorate their room and make the whole process even easier!
